DubDadda Kate Rogers Diane Charlemagne Nightmares on Wax I wanted it to tell a musical story of my life up to and at the time, and also give a narrative on the club scene in Manchester which was far more diverse than the straight down the line either House or Indie nights that seemed to be happening elsewhere at the time.
Even when I now go to play 'straight' in my own mind House sets these days it still baffles me that most people seem to remark that they never hear DJs who play 'across the board' so much.
All the featured artists on the album were people with whom I was playing drums or had been involved with in other projects, with the exception of Flora Purim, who was a musical hero from childhood; The label was pushing me for an extra guest artist as I was completing the record and I insisted it should be someone with whom I had a deep tie if not already having had been a collaborator.
When they asked who would be my ultimate coup I said 'Flora Purim' without hesitation. Switch - Dubble D - Reachin Out my massive surprise they pulled it off I wept with joy when she agreed to work with me, and still have to pinch myself now and again. The original CD flowed as a 'mix', hence it being offered in this format firstly, but you can grab separate tracks should you wish. Manchester-based producer Dubble D, or Danny Ward as the taxman knows him, is obviously passionate about his Switch - Dubble D - Reachin Out.
Raised on a diet of Miles Davis and Art Blakey, it's little wonder that Dubble D's stunning debut Reachin' Out is laced with jazzy undertones and burly beats. But that's not how things initially start out - "Super Hi" and "Switch" owe Switch - Dubble D - Reachin Out to the subtle loops, warm strings and sparse vocal snippets of label mate Fred Everything, and the nu-jazz beats of Compost respectively, then the roots of Blue Note.
The latter, "Switch" features the soulful wailings of Flora Purim, and her daughter Diana Booker, whom add a perfectly languid delivery to match the swinging, yet relaxed production. It's a nostalgic trip down memory lane to when MCs spoke volumes Brain Confusion - Hyperdrive - Brain Confusion misogyny, pimpin' and drugs had yet to dominate rapper's verses, Fuck assholes who say that life is beautiful & theyre happy.

While "Big Fish" opens out into lush down tempo beats overlaid with graceful strummed acoustic guitar and washes of distant horns, in what almost sounds like the cinematic opening theme to a French movie about doomed lovers.
Dubdadda is a highly esteemed artist on the dub reggae scene and has sung with internationally acclaimed artists Mad Professor and Lee Scratch Perry. An equally talented, but again, very different artist brings a beautiful soulful moment to the album on Multiply.

George recorded Dubble D's live drums and fed them into the sampler, added horns and Danny joined in with the funky double bass to create a real treat for beat junkies. Switch - Dubble D - Reachin Out were innovators on the 'Northern bleep' scene in the early 90s before reclaiming their childhood roots in hip-hop and soul in the shape of their stunning LP Smokers Delight, which marked the start of their now trademark laid back, smoked-out sound.
